Gallup–With Honor Institute Survey: Americans Place Highest Trust in Veterans

A new nationwide Gallup survey, conducted in partnership with the With Honor Institute, finds that Americans value military service more than any other credential when evaluating candidates for public office.

Key findings include:

  • 55% of Americans are more likely to vote for a candidate with military service.

  • 83% believe veterans possess strong leadership skills.

  • Large majorities say veterans put country before self, work across differences, and understand global security challenges.

Beyond elections, veterans also rank as highly trusted leaders in disaster response, foreign policy, and community leadership. These findings underscore a powerful truth: veterans continue to embody service above self.

They Served Then. They Lead Now.

Gallup and the With Honor Institute have launched a landmark study on public trust in veterans, exploring how Americans view veterans’ ability to lead and unify our country.

At a time of historically low trust in institutions and heightened polarization, With Honor Institute wants to know: Do Americans see veterans as uniquely positioned to help lead and unite the country?

The poll will explore Americans’ confidence in veterans by assessing whether veterans are seen as embodying:

  • Strong leadership
  • Commitment to democratic values
  • Strong leadership

Overall, the goal of this poll is to determine if military service translates into broader public trust.
